Waste Management
SpawMaxwell provided construction services for Waste
Management in both their Houston and Austin locations.
The Houston project included fast-track delivery for
the renovation of 270,000 square feet of interior office
space in two downtown buildings. Phase I included installation
of three uninterrupted power supply units (UPS); coordination
of telephone & data cabling, cable tray and computer
flooring systems; and installation of battery and diesel
back-up. Phase II included installation of conference
areas; modification of the FM 200 fire suppression
system; and installation of computer room air conditioning
(CRAC) units with new feeds from the power distribution
unit (PDU).
The 40,000 square foot conversion/ retrofit of an
existing warehouse in Austin provided worldwide redundancy
for Waste Management’s disaster recovery operations.
The scope of work included envelop and structural enhancement
to withstand 120 mph winds. The facility received dual
utility service entries, N+1 Uninterrupted Power Supply
(UPS) redundancy with 100% of the site on UPS. Redundant
chillers with 800 tons of total capacity and a 1,500
kw generator with a 15,000 gallon fuel tank were installed.
Each trade produced shop drawings based on the floor
grid to identify every valve, junction box, and seal
tight rack. To provide for flexibility, power was supplied
from two separate feeds from two transformers controlled
by a tie switch (if necessary). SpawMaxwell worked
with General Electric to design a special piece of
switching gear to bring power into phase if power was
switched from different sources entering the building.
The project was completed in 4.5 months.
